Out of the Funk

Get your future started by making money online with an internet busienssI am out of the funk.

It incredible how long it has been since my last post. I have been sort of all over the place the last few months, and haven’t paid much attention to this blog. A lot has to do with my full-time job, working on my other blog, and the holiday season came and went.

That is going to change for 2013, I am focused and have my priorities in order. I’m no longer stuck in the mud with no direction. I have a plan and I will be posting regularly going forward here as well as my other site, which is my primary means for an online business.

I have said before, and still is true, that this blog is more of a journal of my efforts to achieve financial freedom and make money online. I have posted content on my primary blog and have started a Twitter profile, and working on getting a following there.

The really great thing is that I am not doing this all blindly, I am a member of Jeremy and Jason’s Internet Business Mastery Academy which a complete membership site with modules and course material to follow that guides you through every step of the process to create a long lasting internet business.

The plan for 2013 is simple, stay focused and make progress, everyday!

As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, I am using Evernote to keep all my notes and checklists streamlined across all my devices. Making my efforts more efficient and productive.

I will update this blog as to what I am doing to help and grow my business, what the modules are teaching me, and the results from my efforts.

That’s all for now, I just wanted to get this post out there and give a quick update, letting you all know I am back and more focused than ever.

Here’s to a great 2013!

You need a favicon!

Don’t Forget the Small Things! You Need a Favicon!

You have seen them hundreds even thousands of times. But you may not pay much attention to why they are there, or you may have simply overlooked this small image.

A favicon is a tiny 16 x 16 pixel image that is displayed in the upper left corner of your browser, the tabs in the browser, and if you have a site saved as a favorite even in the bookmarks menu.

Why is that so important?

If you keep your standard default favicon it just screams “NOOB!”  It will be blatantly obvious that you are new to this.

It gives you a chance to display an icon that is consistent to your brand.  A visual representation of you or your brand for your audience to easily recognize.

Think about all the icons that are easily recognizable.  The image below is just a small selection of the most popular ones.

I bet you can tell which company most of the favicons belong to just by the icon.

Your site will look more professional with a favicon

Don’t just throw up any icon.  Take some time to think about your site, your brand, and how you want your audience to recognize your site when tabbing through their browser, or pulling your page back up in the favorite menu.

A favicon will not make or break your success online, so I wouldn’t waste a lot of time on it. Just make sure to have a custom one for your site up before you start driving traffic.

Seeing a favicon like this image below will stick you out like a sore thumb and you will lose credibility.

It is too easy to not update your favicon on your webpage.  The video in the beginning of this post shows you how I created a favicon in Photoshop from my logo and uploaded it to my Thesis Theme for WordPress.

If you don’t have Thesis, and can still easily update your favicon.

To change your favicon!

Create a 16 x 16 pixel image using, Photoshop like I did, or gimp, paint, or any other image software you like.  The important thing is the size of the image (16 x 16 pixels) and make sure to save the file as (favicon.ico).

Once you saved this image upload it to your websites root folder. If you are using WordPress the root folder is public_html

Reload your page after you uploaded the favicon.ico file to your websites root folder and gaze at your accomplishment.

That’s one small step for you, one giant leap for your website!

Micro Niche Project | 1

Red dart hitting target center How to build a Micro Niche Site | part 1: The Introduction

It’s been a little while since I posted here on my blog. Not because I got lazy or stop trying to make money online. It’s just that I have been tossing around so many different ideas to where to put most of my effort.

For starters I have a few different projects that take up my time. Let’s not forget about my 9-5 day job too.  So all of my internet business work gets done at night.  Currently I have my hand in the following projects.

  • Amazon store selling physical products that are drop-shipped.
  • Freedom Making Money Online blog.
  • Photoshop Tutorials HQ

And lets add a 4th!

A MICRO SITE!

I am adding a 4th for a few different reason.

1:  My Amazon store right now only actually sells 1 product a month.  Strangely enough it is a cat litter-box hider.  I know it sounds a little wacky, and the even weirder part is that it sells for over $200.  I see potential here but I am not putting much effort into it right now.  I will spend more time on that when I get the other sites running smoothly.

2:  Freedom Making Money Online Blog is really online to document my success and failures as I try to escape the 9-5 and make a full-time income passively entirely online. I will never break into the “Make Money Online” niche without any experience doing it. There will be no trust in me as a credible source of information if I have never done it. There are plenty of wanna-be gurus out there. I will not be one of them.

3:  The Photoshop Tutorials HQ website is in its infancy stage. I am still in the process of getting it designed properly, and creating the amount of material to rank in Google, and build a following that will eventually generate an income is going to take a while.

SO…

That’s were creating a micro site comes in. The idea is to launch a micro site from scratch and post every part of the process online. It will document how I go about doing every step, and we will see if it really leads to making money online.

It is not a get rich quick tactic. I do not plan to make hundreds or thousands of dollars on this project. It is to get some experience doing all phases on internet business and making money online.  Even if the money is only $10 a month.

I keep hearing that the first time you make money online is a life changing experience, it puts it into reality that this really is possible. I have already made some money through Amazon store, which in the past sold more than litter-box hiders. The store sold duvet cover sets, which sold great in the holiday season. Thinking of that it is October and I should put some effort into that again.  That will be a totally different project I will get into here on the blog in the future.

I want this Micro-niche project to be about making money through a small site, that doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to manage.

If it works out and money is made then it can be repeated over and over again making a little money from a lot of different sites will eventually add up.

The micro niche site isn’t going to be my primary means of escaping the 9-5, but I think it will help me gain valuable experience and hopefully lead to a small amount on cash.

My main focus will be the Photoshop site which I will also share my experience with on this blog as well. That site will one day be a full fledge authority site, maybe even have a membership section.  The possibilities are endless with that. But it is just starting and will definitely take time.

Keep a checking back because in the next couple days I will have the first post of the Micro-Niche Project.

The first post will show how to find the niche to create a site about.

If you have any ideas on how I am doing things, comments or suggestions please comment below.

Need a YouTube Bumper Cheap and Fast

Get your professional quality video intro.

Unless you have been living under a rock you have heard of, and I am sure has lost many hours of your life watching videos on YouTube.com.  I for sure get lost in the millions of videos readily available at the click of a button.  Even if I don’t know what to watch, no worries the site will recommend some, making my life so much easier.

The reason for this post is to share a special sale that’s going on.  It’s through Splasheo and its for their new service they are offering, which is Intro Videos, that you can use on YouTube, like I will be doing, or any other video platform you want.

Below is the video I got from Splasheo for only $7!

Go to Splasheo’s website and start the order if you are interested at http://www.splasheo.com/custom/

Also if you decide to get your own make sure to use the coupon code: CRAZYDISCOUNT

This will discount the cost from $47 to just $7.  Slap it on your PayPal account, and for me I received my video back within a couple hours.

You need to hurry because this deal is only going to be available for the next 2 days. (as of this post)

It only takes 3 simple steps to get an awesome video that you can use for anything, not just YouTube.

1             Select your animation

2             Select your music, you can even upload your own music.

3             Add your custom logo, or text for your brand.

That’s it!  Pay the cheap cost of $7 and you will get your professional quality intro video in hours.

YouTube.com is a part of Google so it makes sense if you are doing something business wise online to be on YouTube.  I decided to use my logo that I designed and have this company insert it into their intro animation.  I think the outcome came out awesome.  The music even brings me back to Terminator 2.  It sounds very similar, and that is one of my favorite movies ever.

If anyone does take advantage of this please share you video link in the comments would love to see other videos!

business man thinking wasting timeIt’s been 5 days since my last post, and I am still feeling sidelined. My energies are being spread way too thin, I am thinking and learning too much, wasting time and getting nothing  really done.

Trying to make money online is becoming more and more like “Whac-a-Mole“.

I am the guy with the mallet, waiting eagerly for the next opportunity to surface its little head out from below. The moles are all the different ways to make money online. Every time I swing the mallet down it’s me trying to take in all I can about today’s new idea. As the days goes on and days pass, I become lost in all the noise that is internet business.

In August of this year (2012) I took the next step in making it big on the web. I subscribed to the Internet Business Mastery Academy to provide some guidance and a direction. I decided to subscribe to this membership site because all the big players that I have seen in the internet business genre have either been in the academy or listened to their podcast on iTunes. They must know what they are talking about if they have produced such names as Pat Flynn with the Smart Passive Income Blog.

If you are interested in the academy click the link above.  The link for the academy is an affiliate link. So I would make a commission if you subscribe.

I say that to say this, I will be trying to focus 100% of my efforts on the academy material. They have a proven record, and I am simply going down too many different rabbit holes, and never finding the light at the end.  I have been going through the modules and practically breathing their audio, and videos, so much so that my girlfriend needs to tell me to stop listening to Jeremy and Jason and talk to her.

About two years ago I started an LLC and got real into the drop-shipping method of making money online. I tried it through eBay, and Amazon.com.  I sold a good amount of products, but the margins were low and the amount of work involved was more than I thought.  That turned into a missed opportunity and a failure.

I still have the company and about the only thing I still sell now is a Litter Box Hider, and its expensive too.  Take a look here. As a matter of fact I had a purchase just this past weekend.

I see some potential for this product and market, but again I am being spread too thin to really develop this right now. It’ll stay on the back burner a little while longer while I work through the academy and hopefully make a decent income through my internet business.

Lesson to take here is this. Stay focused, stay organized and be productive. Do not undertake too many different projects at the same time.  Because if you do you will be like me and look back and see a handful of almost completed projects, and none of them making any money online.

If you are currently or have before struggled with being spread too thin, share your experience in the comments below.

Making Money Online Sidelined by FT Job.

Cubibles from a call centerMaking Money Online and Working a Full-time Job isn’t Easy

So it’s Thursday and I haven’t made much progress with my Internet business this week.  Last week was the first week that I went full-time working on the Internet business in trying to make money online.  I was able to increase the amount of time that week because I was in-between jobs.  Prior I was working at home doing technical support, and was able to spend some time working on my Internet business in between calls and during down time, breaks and lunches.  Then I took a week off between the two positions, which most people would have used for an actual vacation. I spent it learning more about marketing, search engine optimization, word a press, twitter, and that the list goes on and on.  I easily spent 40 plus hours in my home office working on making money online.

Currently I do not make any money online, I don’t even have any ads up, or any affiliate links anywhere.  I think back on that week when I was able to spend my time working from home, on my Internet business, and I imagine my life with that kind of freedom. Being able to work from home, work the hours I want is a type of freedom.  I could have spent my time the way I wanted to.  For me I wanted to spend it learning about making money on line with an Internet business.  It didn’t feel like work to me, I would get lost in this stuff.  Not in a way where nothing got done, I was productive, and I saw growth in my traffic and also increased followers on my Twitter account.  It wasn’t going to last for long.

This week  on September 10th,  I started a new position, and sadly it is an 8am-5pm position, and just like that I am back in a cubicle.  I sort of felt like a prisoner who had a life sentence in jail and then being allowed to have a week vacation.  Then after all the fun, drinking on the beach, having to and willingly walk back into a jail cell and closing the cell door behind.  I exaggerate here quite a bit , but I think you get the point.  Bills have to get paid, I need a roof over my head and food in my belly, at the bare minimum I need these things.  What about wanting more though.  I go back to my dream of having  Freedom by Making Money Online.

The real problem with working a full-time job and trying to start an Internet business is finding the time to work on your online business.  It’s cliche but I really do wish there was more time in a day.  To get the business growing again it is going to take more focus and better time management than ever to make this work.  My plan is to come up with 2 to 3 posts a week of my tutorial site, and also this site.  It probably isn’t the best idea to work two blogs at the same time when I am just getting started.  But I do not really consider this one my main focus, this is more to document my journey to financial freedom.  And eventually escaping the dreaded 9-5, or in my case the dreaded 8-5.

Creating content isn’t the only part of internet marketing.  There is off page SEO (search engine optimization) that cannot be neglected.  Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, need to be regularly updated as well.  Organization is going to be more crucial than ever at this point.  Only having an hour or two a day or every other day, I better make sure to stay productive during those times.

The plan is to use checklists, mind maps, and then setting daily, weekly and monthly goals.  I will periodically share useful checklists I have created and also share on the blog some goals and deadlines that I may have, as a way to keep myself organized and be held accountable.

Instead of thinking “I wish there was more time in the day” I need to start thinking and acting in a way that is in line with “I must make the most out of every hour today”.  This way of thought will keep me focused, and stay productive even when the amount of time I have to work on my internet business may be limited.

Are you also trying to make money online, and at the same time you have a full-time job?

Please comment below and share any thoughts you have about this bold move.

Tips on staying more productive or questions on what to do with the limited time you have, post them below.

Till next time, stay focused in the quest to achieve Financial Freedom with Making Money Online.

7 Simple Tips for Niche Selection

Targeted Niche SelectionHow do we pick the right niche to make money online?

This is one of the most common questions.  One I personally was stuck on for weeks, maybe even months.  I got completely focused on trying to find this perfect keyword that will be my personal goldmine.  Well that didn’t happen exactly as I thought and I wasted a lot of valuable time.

In choosing my niche I thought long and hard, going back and forth on different ideas on what I should base my site on.  This site about making money online was easy to pick because I am constantly learning ways to make money online.  I love talking about it and this blog will be a great way to keep me accountable.  Now the make money online niche is completely saturated and I am doing this blog to document my journey.  If it ever ranks in Google that will be a bonus.

Thanks to Pat Flynn over at Smart Passive Income and Jeremy and Jason at Internet Business Mastery with them I was able to get past this road block and move forward.  “We want progress, not perfection” is brought up a lot from Jeremy and it can’t be any more true.

After asking myself some questions and being honest with myself I have decided on a niche that I feel like I will be able to rank well, and be able to monetize down the road.  I will be launching a website that is going to provide Photoshop tutorials geared toward photographers who are beginners with the software.  I picked this niche for a few reason.  Most importantly it is something I can see myself doing years from now.  It is also something I do in my free time.  I am also an avid photographer and I struggled with learning Photoshop in the beginning.  I had a hard time finding a really good resource for a complete beginner.

There is a lot of discussion out there if when picking a topic to base our online business about, do we need to have passion for it?, or do we need to be interested in the specific topic?  I won’t get into this debate, but I will say that to increase our chances of success we must be interested in the topic enough so that when we are writing content and no one is reading we won’t get discouraged.  The journey to financial freedom by making money online is not going to happen overnight.  At times it will get lonely and we will wonder why am we even doing this.  Patience, focus, determination, and perseverance are all qualities that will make success online a reality.

If you are struggling with where to begin, like I did, the best way to start making any progress is going to be to start narrowing down ideas you want to blog about.

Take some time, get a piece of paper or use Word.  During this process do not try to filter out any idea, if you thought it and an idea came to mind it belongs on the paper, write it down.  We will filter these ideas later.

What am I passionate or even interested in?

What problems do I have, or have solved?

What do I want to learn more about?

What do I do in my spare time?

What would I do if I didn’t have to work anymore?

What causes me to lose track of time when I am doing it?

What are my fears?

After you have all these questions answered you are one step closer to picking your perfect niche to develop an online business and start to make money online.

In my next post I will show you how we can narrow this long list to a select group of ideas that will be great to base our site around.

Please share your questions or comments about niche selection or anything else in the comments below.

Time is moneyThis question might be the most important question you need to ask yourself before you get started with trying to Make Money Online“Do you really want to start a business online?”  Seriously consider this question.  I asked myself this question recently and my answer was an obvious “Yes!”.  But after careful thought and consideration I realized this answer wasn’t good enough!  And if your answer is “Yes!” too, it isn’t good enough either.

It is the starting point and is definitely a requirement for beginning the process of making money online.  But we need to dig deeper into this idea.  Let’s get be below the surface into the inner workings of “Why” we want to get started with business online.

Ask yourself the following questions.

  • Why do I want an Internet Business?
  • How will an Internet Business change my life?
  • How much money do I want to make online?

What is Affiliate Marketing?

question mark in red

Affiliate Marketing is a way to make money online by referring potential buyers to someone’s site to purchase their products or service.  When the sale is made, we (the referrer) make a commission, a percentage of the total sale made.  In theory it sounds very easy.

You may be thinking, “All we do is find a product that we feel will sell well, that provides either a great value or service to our audience.  Then link our visitors to the products sale page, when a purchase is made in come the checks.”

At the simplest level that is what affiliate marketing is.  As with most things, this is just the tip of the ice-berg.  This way of making money online is very attractive for a view different reasons.

1.      You don’t have to create any product, or offer a service.

Most of us want to get started online as an affiliate because it is so easy to start.  There is virtually no start-up costs.  You will need a website, and hosting.  Compared to starting any other business this is very affordable for most people.  Costing roughly $5-$11 a month for hosting a domain, and about $10 a year for the purchase of that domain.  The beauty of affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to create a product, or offer a service.  Someone else has gone through the whole process of determining what a particular market or niche needs and developed a solution in the form of an information product that can easily be downloaded.  It may even be a physical product that gets delivered to the person.  You will find that most affiliate marketers are marketing information products.  This is because they can be delivered to the one buying it immediately, satisfying the cultures “I want it, and I want it now!” attitude.   Information products are extremely popular because they cost significantly less time and resources to produce, compared to a physical product.

2.      You don’t deal with the customer service

I have worked in customer service for over 5 years, and trust me it is something I do not want to do in my free time.  I can think of a million things I’d rather be doing.  By not being the one selling the product you are also not the one dealing with the complaints, or refund requests if there are any.  Even the best product will still have to deal with its fair share of questions, complaints, or refunds.  Not having to be involved in this part of the business allows you to focus on more important things.  Like getting the right kind of traffic to your site, to then refer them to the sales page for your affiliate product.   The more targeted traffic the more money you can make.

3.      You can start to be an affiliate very easily in just about any market or niche you want.

Starting off as an affiliate can be done very quickly and the sky is the limit on what you can promote.  Next time you are at a site take a look all the way in the bottom of the page.  In the footer section, and you will most of the time see a link that says either “Affiliate” or “Affiliate Program” or “Referral Program”.  You can simply click the link and review through their particular program and determine if the commission pays well, and if they have a good support system, providing different types of marketing banners, links, even articles and product information that will be useful for you to use when promoting their product or service.

There are also affiliate networks you can join and have access to hundreds or even thousands of different products that are one-click away from you being an affiliate for.  The most common and easy to get started with affiliate marketing is with ClickBank.  They provide all the backend support between you (the affiliate) and the product vendor.  This makes it very easy for both to do business together.  They have tens of thousands of products you can promote with up to 75% commissions.  Not only this but they also do all the tracking and have detailed reporting so you know exactly how effective your marketing is.

This all sounds great, and it is.  But there are some things to consider before getting started with your online business as an affiliate.

1.      This is not a get-rich quick method.

The internet is flooded with “Internet Gurus” claiming they have the next way for you to quit your job and make millions while drinking champagne on your yacht.  They are for the most part full of it, and make money online by selling false hope to gullible prey, and I say prey because it is as if the new-comers are taken advantage of by being sold products that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and produce no real valuable content.

I am here to show you what works, and what doesn’t.  And what to expect with the ways of making money online I discuss.  Affiliate marketing will make you money, but it will not happen overnight, and you will have to work at it.  Do not expect to be rich with one site.

2.      It takes time to build traffic.

Unless you plan to pay for traffic you may not even see any traffic coming to your site for weeks, or months, sometimes you may feel like giving up because you aren’t seeing the traffic you expected.  It is about persistence and staying focused.  I will talk more about that in a later post.  For now, know that if you plan on getting organic search engine traffic it will take time.

3.      Pick the right niche/market.

The most common delay in getting started, and biggest reason people give up is because from the beginning their chosen market/niche was never any good.  One reason is there was not enough people in the market to sell to.  Making it a poor way of making any real money online.  Another reason ideas fail is because you pick a niche that your audience are not willing to pay for a solution.  The internet is full of free information and getting someone to pay for something that is readily available for free can be a waste of your time.  For example, I wouldn’t suggest getting involved in a recipe site, or referring someone to a place to get premium paid for cooking tips or recipes.  Simply because there are so many free sites out there, providing high quality information for no cost.

4.      The sales page for the product needs to convert.

When you start to send your traffic to the vendors sales page is when you make the sale, or you miss the sale and they close the browser or go somewhere else and not buy anything.  Before you blindly get involved with marketing a product or service be sure to review the site you send you visitors too.  It is extremely important that this page is a high quality sales page.  Nothing will be more frustrating for you as an affiliate marketer than getting qualified traffic to an ineffective sales page resulting in missed commissions.

I briefly went over the pros and cons to Affiliate Marketing and there is plenty more discuss.  I will go into each facet of How to Make Money Online as an Affiliate in more detail in future posts so please subscribe email newsletter and check back frequently.

I am sure you have plenty of questions so please post any comments below.

The Internet is forever expanding; on average everyday there are over 100,000 WordPress blogs being created.  With all this information coming on the scene and the so-called Internet Guru’s already flooding the Web, how do we stay organized and stay focused?  My last post was me at a point where I didn’t have a clear direction, I was lost in the wilderness of Information Overload.  I found a great way to stay focused and organized.  I believe when we are trying to Make Money Online we need to be extremely focused.  There are always new ways to do things, and the next great idea to make money seems very enticing and we are eager and excited and tempted to quickly change what we are doing and try the next idea.

It is extremely important to have checklists, and goals; goals for your day, week, month and even longer.  Keep your eye on the prize, Financial Freedom.  Without goals we will just wander around never really ending at our destination of really making money online.  We will just be like the rest of wanna-be’s soaking up all this information and never implementing any of the strategies we have learned.

If you are like me and may have been lost or confused with where to start, lets first come up with a method of organization.  We need to organize our thoughts, ideas, questions and answers, tasks that need to be completed, research we need to do, marketing, SEO, the list goes on and on.  I recently heard of a program called Evernote.  This handy application has made wonders in my internet business.  Click Here to go to their webpage, or copy and past the following URL http://evernote.com/

Take a moment, download the app for your computer, set up an account, it is very easy.  Then download it to your iPhone, iPad, tablet, as a matter of fact download it for every device you have that it is compatible for, and start using it!

I am confident this well help you stay organized and keep you on track for success.  Let me know what you think of it and how it has helped you
